Alcohol Treatment Requirement (ATR)

This is a new Criminal Justice initiative which gives the courts the opportunity of offering a treatment based intervention to alcohol related offending. It aims to enhance motivation to change alcohol related criminal behaviour through a combination of legal supervision, coercion with evidence based models of alcohol treatment. In 2006 Wakefield Community Safety Partnership accepted a proposal to pilot the delivery of an ATR through partnership between West Yorkshire Probation and Wakefield and District Alcohol Team.

This 2 year pilot commenced in August 2007 and two staff are now in post based at Probation offices in the district.

To date approximately 80 assessments have been completed and 40 ATR orders made. There have been a number of positive outcomes from the ATRs: Successful community detoxifications, maintained abstinence, in-patient detoxifications, engagement with external agencies such as mental health services and clients returning to employment.
