Clinical Director's Diary February 2007 PDF Print E-mail

Hello to you all

Since the last update we learnt the news that our bid to become a Department of Health pathfinder was unsuccessful ...

We are proud of the fact that we reached the national assessment panel stage of the process and were heartened by all the well wishes and supportive messages that we have received by partners in recent weeks.

So what next you may ask?

Whilst investment from the Department of Health would have been welcome, we have not been thrown off course and continue to work towards our goal of developing the social enterprise.

The social care investors Futurebuilders have awarded us funding, which has been matched from local sources keen to develop the third sector, is sufficient for us to procure legal advice and some project management.

Our key stakeholders and partners are also supporting the initiative and the promise of developing ideas and business plans that realise our social aims. In the next update I will have more information on the organisations proposed structure, board and membership and there will be opportunities for staff to contribute through a series of discussion forums.

Well done to all at WISMS who contributed to the 5th Annual Public Health Conference where a number of our services were showcased and our plans for social enterprise were shared with a wider public health audience.

What's New in WISMS

  • The Alcohol Team is well on course to meet its Local Area Agreement Targets with record numbers of referrals and community detoxifications being completed.

  • Best wishes to the Hemsworth Community Drug Team, who after a series of set backs are to move into their bespoke, purpose built premises in South Kirby.

  • Castleford Community Drug Team welcomes the first of the WISMS Well Being Support Nurses who will take responsibility for delivering holistic healthcare interventions including screening and vaccination against blood borne viruses to the 200 or so service users accessing care through this team.

  • The Liaison Nurse to the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust is analysing the results of the first staff skills and attitudes audit across the medical and surgical wards that commonly treat substance misusers.  Further information to follow on this site.  The audit will inform a training programme for nurses and medical staff working at Pinderfields and Pontefract hospitals from WISMS and the Public Health Training Team.

  • Dual diagnosis services are currently being externally reviewed as part of the commissioners’ ongoing commitment to service improvement.

The review which will be completed by April 2007 is being conducted by the RCGP Substance Misuse Unit.  Interviews and contributions to the review including the voice and views of service users and carers are being collated.

The results and recommendations to the commissioners will help inform service development for individuals with mental health and substance misuse problems in this district.

  • The new WISMS network of Care Planning Champions is being led by one of the team leaders, Jon Pearson, and aims to clarify the roles and responsibilities of care planning champions in the various teams.  The network will meet regularly and aims to share good practice.

New Name for the Enterprise - Your Ideas Wanted

WISMS is instantly recognisable across the district, but we have had a steady trickle of comments regarding changing the name to better reflect our values and mission as a growing business with plans to diversify.

Do you have an idea for a new name or perhaps you know of a way we can develop a strong and meaningful brand for the organisation?

Do you feel we should create a new identity for WISMS?
How would WISMS translate if we were to offer services outside of the Wakefield district?

We will be communicating with all staff shortly to get their views on a name and mission for the new organisation.

The WISMS team is actively seeking ideas for new areas of development for the social enterprise.  If you have an idea you wish to share or comment on any of the services we currently offer, please contact us through the contact us link or contribute to the discussion forums that will be commencing from this month. In the meantime gather your creative thoughts and email us with your new 'name' ideas to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ensuring that you title the email 'WISMS NEW NAME' in the subject bar.

Bye for now.

Linda
