Treatment for alcohol related offenders

There is a Criminal Justice initiative which gives the courts the opportunity of offering a treatment based intervention to alcohol related offending.  This is called Alcohol Treatment Requirement (ATR).    It aims to help motivate individuals to change alcohol related criminal behaviour through a combination of legal supervision and alcohol treatment. In 2006 Wakefield Community Safety Partnership started an ATR pilot involving partnership working between West Yorkshire Probation and Wakefield and District Alcohol Team.

This 2 year pilot started in August 2007 and two staff are now in post based at probation offices in the district.  To date approximately 80 assessments have been completed and 40 ATR orders made. There have been a number of positive outcomes from this pilot, including:

  • Successful community detoxifications;
  • Maintained abstinence;
  • In-patient detoxifications;
  • Engagement with external agencies such as mental health services; and
  • Clients returning to employment.
